Motorhome Rental

Motorhome Rental in India — The Honest Guide

Search “motorhome rental India” and you’ll find dozens of listings. Here’s the uncomfortable truth almost none of them mention: most vehicles rented as motorhomes in India are vanity vans — film-industry vehicles with sofas and mirrors, but no working toilet, no shower, no kitchen you can actually cook in, and no beds meant for overnight sleep. They’re built for an actor to wait in between takes, not for a family to live in for a week.

A real motorhome — what Indians call a caravan, Americans an RV, and Australians a campervan — is a self-contained home on wheels. This guide explains what genuine motorhome rental in India looks like, what it costs, where it can take you, and how to avoid paying holiday money for a make-up room on wheels. It’s written by My Rolling Homes, operators of The Explorer — India’s only rental caravan with a working toilet and hot shower.

The vanity van problem

What Makes a Real Motorhome — and Why Most Indian Rentals Aren’t One

Four things separate a genuine motorhome from a dressed-up van, and every one of them matters more on day three of a trip than it does in the listing photos:

A working bathroom

A flushing WC, a hot shower, and the water and plumbing to run them for days. Without this, every morning of your “caravan holiday” starts with a hunt for a highway restroom.

A real kitchen

A hob, a sink with running water, a fridge, and prep space — so you can cook breakfast beside a lake instead of queueing at a dhaba because the van has nothing but a kettle.

Beds built for sleep

Proper mattresses and berths designed for full nights, night after night — not a sofa you can technically lie on. If the listing can’t say how many it sleeps, it seats.

Off-grid power & water

Solar, batteries, an inverter, and large fresh-water tanks. A vanity van dies when its generator is switched off; a motorhome keeps your fridge, lights, and shower running in the middle of nowhere.

The vehicle

The Explorer — India’s Only Fully Self-Contained Rental RV

One flagship caravan, built and maintained to a standard the marketplace listings can’t match. Everything below is on board and included in the rate — nothing is an “add-on”.

Chassis & ride

6-wheeled Ashok Leyland platform with air suspension — stable on highways, proven above 17,000 ft on the Khardung La road.

Bathroom

Working WC, hot shower, and wash basin — the only rental caravan in India with all three. A 15L geyser keeps showers hot even at altitude.

Water

500 litres of fresh water on board plus RO-purified drinking water on tap — enough for days between refills, which the crew handles.

Power

1000W rooftop solar, a 2500VA inverter, and a 4KVA generator as backup. Lights, fridge, charging, and appliances run fully off-grid.

Kitchen

Full galley: hob, sink with running water, fridge, and prep counters. Cook your own meals or let the crew set up breakfast outside.

Sleeping

Sleeps 4 adults + 2 children across a master bed and convertible berths, with fresh linen and bedding included.

Entertainment

Lounge seating, screen and music on board — for the evenings when the view outside finally goes dark.

Outdoor camp kit

Rooftop deck, BBQ, bonfire pit, camp chairs and table — the crew sets up your campsite wherever you park for the night.

Crew

A professional chauffeur and a helper travel with every booking. They drive, refill water, service the tanks, and camp separately at night.

Pricing

How Motorhome Rental Pricing Works in India

The Explorer rents at ₹19,900 per day plus GST — roughly $240 a night. That one number covers the caravan, your professional driver and helper, every permit (including Ladakh inner-line and Rohtang), 300 km of travel per day pooled across your booking, full bedding and linen, RO drinking water, solar and generator power, and the complete outdoor camp kit. The only thing you pay on the road is fuel, directly at the pump, with zero markup.

Marketplace listings will show you campervans at ₹9,999–15,999 per day and let you assume the rest. Here’s what the rest usually looks like:

Cost line Typical marketplace listing The Explorer
Advertised daily rate₹9,999–15,999₹19,900
Driver charges+₹1,500–3,000/day, often plus his meals & stayIncluded — driver + helper
Generator+₹300–500/hour when you need powerIncluded — solar first, genset free
Kilometre cap100–150 km/day, steep per-km overage300 km/day, pooled across the trip
PermitsYour problemArranged & included
Toilet & hot showerAlmost never — hotel stops insteadWorking WC + hot shower on board
Water50–100L — refills eat your itinerary500L + RO drinking water
Realistic all-in daily cost₹15,000–22,000 without a bathroom₹19,900 + GST, everything on board

Once the “cheap” option adds a driver, generator hours, extra kilometres, and the hotel rooms you’ll still need because there’s no toilet, it frequently costs more than the real motorhome — for a fraction of the experience. Full budgets, fuel math, and payment details are on the pricing page.

FAQ

Motorhome Rental in India — Every Question, Answered

A genuine, fully equipped motorhome costs ₹19,900 per day plus GST with My Rolling Homes — roughly $240 a night. That rate is all-inclusive: professional driver and helper, all permits, 300 km per day (pooled across your booking), full kitchen and bathroom, bedding, and the complete outdoor camp kit. The only running cost is fuel, paid by you directly at the pump. Marketplace listings advertised at ₹9,999–15,999 per day usually exclude the driver, generator hours, and kilometres — and most have no toilet at all.
Yes — exactly one on the rental market. The Explorer by My Rolling Homes is India’s only rental caravan with a fully working toilet, hot shower, and wash basin on board, backed by a 500-litre water system and a 15L geyser. Every other vehicle marketed as a “caravan” or “motorhome” for rent in India is a vanity van or converted tempo traveller with, at best, a dry cassette toilet — and usually nothing.
Practically, no. Indian commercial-vehicle rules, state permit regimes, and road conditions make self-drive motorhome hire almost non-existent here — and on Himalayan routes it would be genuinely unwise. My Rolling Homes trips are chauffeur-driven: a professional driver and a helper travel with you, handle the roads, permits, water refills, and tank servicing, and camp separately at night so you have the caravan to yourselves.
A vanity van is a film-industry vehicle — sofas, mirrors, air-conditioning — designed for an actor to rest in for a few hours between takes. It has no functional toilet, no shower, no kitchen you can cook in, and no beds for overnight sleep. A real motorhome is a self-contained home: WC, hot shower, kitchen, fresh-water tanks, off-grid power, and proper beds, so you can live aboard for days without a hotel. Most of what is rented as a “caravan” in India is actually a vanity van.
The Explorer sleeps 4 adults comfortably and up to 6 with children — a rear master bed, a convertible dinette, and additional berths. Day-tripping capacity is higher, but for multi-day trips we recommend 4 adults or a family of 5–6 for genuine comfort.
The Explorer already has. It has crossed the Atal Tunnel, Baralacha La, Tanglang La, and Khardung La on its 6-wheeled Ashok Leyland chassis with air suspension, driven by a chauffeur experienced on Himalayan roads. Delhi-to-Ladakh expeditions run 12–15 days between June and September, with inner-line permits arranged by us and oxygen carried on board.
No licence of any kind — because you never drive. My Rolling Homes rentals are chauffeur-driven, so there is no licence check, no security deposit against driving damage, and no insurance excess hanging over your holiday. You book, you board, you travel.
Yes, done properly. You travel with a two-person professional crew who know the routes, choose vetted overnight halts, and handle every roadside interaction. The caravan locks fully, carries its own water and power, and the crew camps alongside each night. Families with young children and international visitors make up a large share of our guests.
There is no single season — the route rotates with the calendar. October to March is prime for Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle, and everything on the plains. June to September is the only window for Ladakh and Spiti, when the high passes are open. March to June and September to November suit Rishikesh and the lower Himalayas. In other words: a motorhome trip works twelve months a year, you just point it at the right region.
Absolutely — international guests are some of our most frequent travellers. No Indian driving licence is needed (the trip is chauffeur-driven), international cards work through Razorpay, and we arrange all permits including Ladakh inner-line permits, which have extra requirements for foreign nationals. See our international visitors guide for the full picture.
